THREE SpecialSessions and THREE Workshops

The 25th IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (IEEE ITSC 2022) is the annual flagship conference sponsored by the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society, with the theme of "Blockchain-based ITS: The Human Use of Cyber-Physical-Social Transportation Systems". ThisDistributed Hybrid Conference (DHC) starts from September 19 and lasts to October 7. During this period, a total of 145 Distributed Hybrid Conferences will be held in an orderly manner.

On September 20,ITSC 2022 arranged in a distributed hybrid way and held THREE Special Sessions and THREE Workshops of almost all frontier research and hot topics in the field of intelligent transportation, in terms of Transportation 5.0 and Parallel Transportation, CPSS based Traffic Control, CPSS based Complex City Systems, Graph Neural Network for Traffic Forecasting, Virtual Coupling: A Novel Concept in Railways I, Virtual Coupling: A Novel Concept in Railways II.

Agendas of September 20 is announced as follows:

Workshop: Transportation 5.0 and Parallel Transportation

Session Chair: Peijun Ye (Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences)

Schedule:8:30-10:15(Beijing time), September 20, 2022.

Abstract:

The interaction and interoperability between real world and virtual world are now evolving rapidly with the fast development of parallel sytems, artificial intelligence, parallel intelligence, big data, cloud computing, social computing, virtual reality, and IoT technologies. These advanced techniques have great potential and capacity to enable new methodology, applications, and dramatic improvements for current Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Transportation 5.0, an emerging field of transportation research and applications, is based on Cyber-Physical-Social Systems (CPSS). Transportation systems, as one of the most complex man-made systems, face a number of complicated and cost/time/space-critical tasks. To this end, developing new concepts/methodology/tools/ algorithms/applications for future ITS with these technologies become more important and promising.

Workshop: CPSS based Traffic Control

Abstract:

The new ICT technologies are shaping and transforming the way we live and work by connecting human, devices, and services tightly. In CPSS, the physical world is deeply coupled and interact with the virtual cyber space, which have evolved to be a new normal mode for the operation of modern social organizations. CPSS have great potential and capacity to improve traffic control systems. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researcher and practitioners in academia, industry and government to present and discuss their latest research findings and engineering experiences in CPSS based traffic control.

Workshop: CPSS based Complex City Systems

Session Chair: Xiaodong Zhang (Beijing Municipal Institute of City Planning & Design), Yisheng Lv (Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences)

Schedule: 14:00-16:00(Beijing time), September 20, 2022.

Abstract:

City systems , as one of the most complex man-made systems, are typical Cyber-Physical-Social Systems (CPSS) and face a number of complicated and cost/time/space-critical tasks. The fast development and application of sensing, computing, artificial intelligence, parallel systems, social media, wearable and mobile devices have produced huge volumes of real-time social and physical signals. These advanced technologies are now creating digital footprints of real world leading to virtual city systems.

Obviously, the real city is running with its equivalent, the artificial city in virtual space, in a parallel and interactive way. The artificial city has the descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive functions on the real city. There is a closed-loop workflow between the real city and the artificial city, which iteratively optimize the urban systems, leading to a new paradigm of intelligent urban management.

The goal of this workshop is to encourage researchers and practitioners to handle these tasks more effectively by introducing CPSS-based parallel city, which can make a better use of the new ICT technologies. We hope this workshop can attract urban researchers and practitioners to join us along this promising new direction.

Special Session07: Graph Neural Network for Traffic Forecasting

Session Chair:Weiwei Jiang (Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications)

Abstract:

Traffic forecasting is important for the success of intelligent transportation systems. Deep learning models, including convolution neural networks and recurrent neural networks, have been extensively applied in traffic forecasting problems to model spatial and temporal dependencies. In recent years, to model the graph structures in transportation systems as well as contextual information, graph neural networks (GNNs) have been introduced and have achieved state-of-the-art performance in a series of traffic forecasting problems. In this special session, we aim to collect the studies that explore the application of graph neural networks for traffic forecasting problems.

Special Session08: Virtual Coupling: A Novel Concept in Railways I

Session Chair: Shuai Su (State Key Lab of Rail Control and Safety, Beijing Jiaotong University)

Abstract:

Railways, which serve as the backbone of public transportation, have made significant progress in Europe and Asia and are beginning to gain popularity in many countries. In recent years, the development of train-to-train communication and intelligent control technologies has created unprecedented potential for the transformation of the railway system, giving rise to the concept of virtual coupling (VC). Not only can VC shorten the tracking distance between trains and improve the transportation efficiency of the railways, but it can also increase the flexibility of train resource usage. VC is a disruptive innovation in the railways. However, most VC research is still in the conceptual exploration stage, and there is only a small amount on its technology development, which cannot provide a sufficient theoretical foundation for technological development of its train operation control system. Because of the sophisticated capabilities of VC, many potential problems in the engineering application are constantly thrown out in the process of its concept exploration. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out more research on the implementation technology of VC.

The 25th IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (IEEE ITSC 2022) is the annual flagship conference sponsored by the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society. From 1997 to 2021, it has been held 24 times, covering 24 cities in 12 countries in Asia, Europe, North America, South America and Oceania. The main conference of the 25th IEEE ITSC 2022 will be held in Macau, China. IEEE ITSC 2022 welcomes articles and presentations in the areas of intelligent transportation systems and automated driving, conveying new advances and developments in theory, modeling, simulation, testing, case studies, as well as large-scale deployment. The conference particularly invites and encourages prospective authors to share their recent research work, findings, perspectives, and developments related to advanced blockchain-based intelligent transportation systems.
